Ahead of the upcoming Governorship election in Edo State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has lodged a complaint with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, accusing the state Governor, Godwin Obaseki, of planning to arrest the party's chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, on trumped-up charges.
In a petition dated June 13 and titled "A Case of Executive Intimidation, Political Harassment, and Baseless Accusation by the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki," Tenebe expressed concerns over the governor's alleged use of the state police command to intimidate and harass opposition figures.
The petition, which was also sent to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, alleges that Governor Obaseki is deploying all forms of security apparatus to deal mercilessly with anyone who opposes his policies.
Tenebe claims that the governor has ordered the police to lay siege at the APC's secretariat during the inauguration of its State Governorship Campaign Council, with the intention of arresting him to score political points.
The APC chairman has called on the IGP to intervene by transferring the case, if any, to his office for a discreet investigation. He emphasized the need for justice and an end to the unwarranted harassment.
The allegations come at a crucial time as political tensions rise in Edo State, with the gubernatorial election on the horizon.
The APC's petition underscores the party's concern over the potential misuse of state power and the importance of maintaining a fair and transparent electoral process.
