Drug Abuse Fuels Insecurity in Nigeria, Says NDLEA Chairman Marwa

Retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has stated that drug abuse among Nigerians is the main driver of insecurity in the country.

Marwa made this assertion during a recent sensitization and advocacy program for women and youth in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The event, organized by the NDLEA in collaboration with Dr Aminu Gusau, aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and its consequences.

Marwa emphasized that the involvement of women and youth in drug abuse has taken a dangerous turn, with young people, females, and those living in rural areas increasingly becoming users.

Marwa, represented by Director, Drug Demand Reduction, Assistant Commandant General of Narcotics (ACGN), Dr. Ngozi Madubuike, highlighted the various reasons youth engage in drug use, including relaxation, experimental curiosity, and enhancing performance.

He warned that drug abuse leads to criminal offenses, which in turn fuel insecurity, such as armed robbery, murder, kidnapping, and banditry.

The NDLEA Chairman called on the youth to shun drug abuse, as it is harmful to their health and has the potential to destroy their future.

He stressed the importance of addressing this issue, as it affects not only the individual but also society as a whole.

Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara commended the organizers of the program for choosing such a relevant topic, given the current security challenges in the region.

Dr Aminu Gusau, the co-organizer, echoed the sentiment that drug abuse is a complex and multifaceted problem that affects individuals, families, and communities worldwide.

The event, attended by various secondary school students, women, and youth, aimed to educate and empower the attendees to make informed decisions and lead healthy lives.

By addressing the issue of drug abuse and its impact on insecurity, Nigeria can work towards a safer and more prosperous future for all its citizens.
