DisCos Apologize as National Grid Collapses for the Second Time in 2024

Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) have issued an apology to their customers as Nigeria faces another nationwide blackout due to the collapse of the National Grid for the second time in 2024.

The grid, which supplies electricity to millions of homes and businesses, went down at 4:30 pm on Thursday, causing a significant drop in power output and leaving the country in darkness.

Data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) indicates that the grid collapsed at around 4:00 pm on Thursday, with the power output falling from 2,984 megawatts (MW) to zero in just an hour.

All 21 plants connected to the grid ceased operations by 5:00 pm, resulting in a complete loss of power supply across the nation.

DisCos such as the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) have confirmed the system failure and explained that the current blackout is due to the national grid collapse.

They have appealed to their customers for understanding and patience as they work with their partners to restore the power supply.

This latest grid collapse follows similar incidents in 2023, with the National Grid experiencing multiple collapses throughout the year.

The recent blackout is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Nigeria’s electricity sector and the need for significant improvements in infrastructure and maintenance.

As the DisCos continue to work towards restoring power to their customers, the nation remains in the dark, highlighting the urgency of addressing the issues that have led to these repeated grid collapses.

It is crucial for the government, the TCN, and other stakeholders to collaborate in finding long-term solutions to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply for the millions of Nigerians who depend on it.
