The Defence Headquarters has brought together leaders from military veterans' associations for a strategy session aimed at boosting collaboration on welfare issues and national service. Gen.
Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, spearheaded the one-day retreat in Abuja alongside the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers' Association of Nigeria.
Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, said the gathering created space for meaningful talks and fresh commitment to tackling problems facing retired military personnel.
The retreat underscored that consistent dialogue offers the best path to resolving veterans' concerns, according to officials.
Oluyede, represented by Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, the Chief of Defence Operations, stressed that the welfare of retired personnel ranks high on the Defence Headquarters' agenda.
He noted that the military leadership remains focused on rolling out a recently approved salary increase alongside corresponding pension adjustments through proper channels.
The CDS praised President Tinubu for his dedication to improving conditions for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces. He urged veterans to exercise patience while processes move forward, pledging that the Defence Headquarters would push for better healthcare, faster pension disbursements and improved welfare schemes.
Oluyede encouraged retired military personnel to preserve the discipline, loyalty and patriotism that marked their service years. He also called on veterans' associations to strengthen ties with each other and remain engaged in national progress.
The retreat highlighted the importance of retired officers mentoring younger generations and championing efforts that strengthen national unity, peace and security. Veterans were told they have a continuing role to play in building the nation's future.
