In a proactive move to combat the looming threat of floods, the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has commenced the de-silting of blocked drainage channels in Ashaka. Dr. Charles Olisa, the Board Member representing the Ndokwa ethnic nationality, inspected the ongoing work today, August 11, 2025.
During his inspection, Dr. Olisa highlighted that the de-silting exercise is a statewide initiative, carried out as a key part of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's "MORE Agenda." This effort is aimed at ensuring Delta State remains free from the devastating effects of flooding. He noted that the DESOPADEC Board, led by Chairman Olorogun John Nani and MD/CEO Chief Festus Ochonogor, has been proactive in addressing the needs of the people since its inception.
The de-silting work is being conducted simultaneously at various critical locations, including Hospital Road, Ashaka Market Road, and their environs. The project is already generating excitement among residents, traders, and staff of Ashaka General Hospital, who anticipate a significant reduction in flooding incidents. This initiative is expected to yield positive outcomes, such as a reduced risk of flood damage, improved sanitation, enhanced public health, and increased economic activity.
The project aligns not only with the Delta State Government’s "MORE Agenda" but also with the Federal Government's "Renewed Hope Initiative" under President Bola Tinubu.
Community members have been quick to express their gratitude. Mrs. Augustina Ossai, a meat seller at Ashaka market, thanked the DESOPADEC Board for the "good work" and pledged to keep the de-silted area near her stall clean. Similarly, Comrade Ona Chukwudi, the Ashaka Youth President, praised the "massive work being done," stating that while flooding used to be severe in the past, the commission's yearly interventions have ensured water now flows freely to the river.
Mr. Oshogba Precious, the President of Environmental Health Workers in Delta State, appealed to the Board for waste bins to be placed in strategic community locations to prevent indiscriminate refuse dumping. He promised that environmental officers would conduct sensitization campaigns and enforce measures to punish defaulters.
Dr. Charles Olisa was accompanied on the inspection by Comrade Kingsley Iweka, Mr. Monday Akpe (Head of Environment Department, Ndokwa East LGA), Comrade Tom Onah (Youth President, Ashaka Community), and other dignitaries.
