The Delta State Police Command has achieved a significant breakthrough in its fight against armed robbery, recovering a stolen Mercedes-Benz GLK, dangerous firearms, multiple motorcycles, and a large cache of stolen valuables.
The success comes from a series of coordinated, intelligence-led operations across the state, resulting in the arrest of key suspects and the neutralisation of criminal threats.
Under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, police operatives in Asaba and Ogwashi-Ukwu carried out the sting operations. According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, one operation on August 5 led to the interception of a suspected stolen Mercedes-Benz GLK in Asaba.
Following a tip, the DPO of B Division, CSP Edewor Akponegware, and his team arrested a suspect, Chinedu Eze, as he attempted to sell the vehicle. Further investigation revealed the SUV had been snatched at gunpoint in Enugu in April 2023, during which its owner was shot. The recovered vehicle, fraudulently re-registered, is now in police custody.
In a separate incident on August 4, a distress call about an armed robbery in Ogwashi-Ukwu mobilised the DPO, CSP Okoyomon Israel, and his team. While the robbers attempted to flee, two suspects, Thywill Selvin (22) and Guntim Bako (32), were arrested.
From the suspects, police recovered a pump-action rifle, a Beretta pistol, three assault rifle rounds, two motorcycles, and a wide array of stolen electronics and personal belongings. Several victims have since identified their property.
Commending the operatives, CP Abaniwonda reiterated the Command’s commitment to aggressive, intelligence-driven policing. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, stating that early information is the most potent weapon against crime. SP Edafe added that these successful operations underscore the Command's unwavering resolve to secure lives and property throughout Delta State.
