In response to the rising crime committed with Keke and Okada in Delta State, the State government, through the Directorate of Transportation, has commenced the process of registering operators of commercial tricycles (Keke) and motorcycles, (Okada). The initiative aims to enhance identification and ensure the security and safety of both passengers and operators.
Recent incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and even rape have been linked to individuals using tricycles and motorcycles for criminal activities. In some cases, passengers, and even the operators, have fallen victim to these attacks.
Addressing journalists in Effurun over the weekend, Dr Julius Babogha, a Consultant to the Directorate of Transportation, highlighted the importance of tricycles and motorcycles as essential means of mobility in the current economic climate. However, he expressed concern over how criminals have exploited these modes of transport to perpetrate heinous crimes against innocent Deltans.
“This alarming trend has necessitated government intervention to mitigate the situation,” Dr Babogha said. “Passengers are being kidnapped daily, and some are even killed. Operators themselves are also targeted, with their tricycles and motorcycles snatched. The government cannot turn a blind eye to this.”
Dr Babogha emphasized the need for a robust database of all tricycle and motorcycle operators, which will help track and identify individuals engaged in criminal activities. “Through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), we have advised the government to establish a database for all tricycle riders and motorcyclists. This will significantly reduce kidnapping and other crimes,” he stated.
The registration process involves operators visiting Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) offices across the state to register their details with the government. “Our staff, who are undergoing training, will ensure that the process is seamless and effective. Registration has started on a skeletal basis, but we are still in the sensitization phase,” he explained.
After verification of the provided information, operators will undergo data capturing and be issued ID cards and tags. “This measure will ensure accountability and provide a layer of security for both passengers and operators,” Dr Babogha added.
The initiative underscores the Delta State Government’s commitment to curbing crime and ensuring a safer environment for its residents.
