Delta deploys ‘Number Plate Detect’ cameras to track traffic offenders

The Delta State Government has introduced an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, also known as Plate Detect, to strengthen traffic law enforcement and improve road safety across the state.

In a special announcement issued by the Director of Public Communication and Functioning Permanent Secretary, Stella Macaulay, residents and motorists were informed that the technology has already been deployed to monitor traffic activities and detect violations on major roads in Delta State.

According to the statement, the ANPR system uses strategically installed cameras capable of scanning vehicle number plates and automatically cross-checking them with a central database to identify traffic violations.

Authorities explained that the technology is designed to detect offences such as expired vehicle particulars, over-speeding and running red lights.

Once a violation is detected, the system will automatically notify the vehicle owner through phone calls and text messages sent to the registered phone number linked to the vehicle.

The notification will also inform offenders of the specific violation and direct them to settle any outstanding fines through the state’s official payment portal, PayDelta at www.paydelta.ng

Government officials said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise traffic enforcement and reduce accidents caused by reckless driving and non-compliance with road safety regulations.

Motorists were also warned that failure to settle outstanding fines could affect the renewal of their vehicle particulars and may lead to the impoundment of vehicles by relevant enforcement agencies.

The state Directorate of Transport, therefore, urged residents to ensure their vehicle documents remain valid and up to date, and to adhere to traffic rules strictly.

For further enquiries, residents and motorists were advised to contact the Directorate of Transport via call, text message or WhatsApp on 08154087910, 09063522324, or 08139038432.
