The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned Deltans against raising their expectations of meaningful development under the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in 2025.
This reaction followed a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, urging citizens to anticipate more projects from the current administration. The APC, however, expressed skepticism, citing what it termed the administration’s poor performance in 2024.
In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, Esq., the APC criticized the Oborevwori administration for failing to address critical issues like infrastructure, healthcare, education, and job creation despite receiving monthly federal allocations exceeding ₦200 billion. “The only tangible project the administration can point to is the Effurun flyover construction,” Onojeghuo remarked.
The APC also slammed the government’s allocation of ₦1 billion for road construction in each local government area, describing it as insufficient to address the deplorable state of roads across the state. “Delta State has some of the worst roads in Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta region. Allocating ₦1 billion per local government is a mere drop in the ocean and cannot fix the deteriorating road conditions,” Onojeghuo stated, citing examples such as the infamous ‘Okowa swimming pool’ road in Sapele Local Government Area.
The party accused Dr. Osuoza of misleading the public with exaggerated promises of new projects to distract from the administration’s shortcomings. “This administration is following the same deceptive path as its predecessor, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who left the state in massive debt with little to show for it. Billions were allegedly spent on storm drains and roads, yet the state remains plagued by floods and crumbling infrastructure,” the statement read.
Highlighting the over ₦500 billion debt inherited by Oborevwori’s administration, the APC alleged that the governor’s primary focus has been servicing these debts rather than initiating meaningful development projects. “Schools lack basic amenities, healthcare facilities are overstretched, and road networks remain impassable. This government has failed to prioritize the welfare of its citizens,” the APC added.
The statement also accused the Oborevwori administration of being disconnected from the aspirations of Deltans. “This government has not shown the urgency or commitment required to improve the lives of its people. Transparency and accountability are lacking, and the administration seems more interested in political survival than governance,” the APC said.
As 2025 approaches, the Delta APC urged citizens to critically evaluate the government’s performance and hold it accountable for unfulfilled promises. “It is essential for Deltans to demand better governance and advocate for a leadership that prioritizes their welfare over political loyalty,” the party emphasized.
The APC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to policies that foster development, create jobs, and improve living conditions for all Deltans. It called on the state government to urgently address the lingering issues of infrastructure, education, and healthcare instead of relying on what it termed “cheap propaganda” to manage public perception.
