In a significant crackdown on petrol smuggling, the National Coordinator of the Special Operation of the Nigeria Customs Service, "Operation Whirlwind team," Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, announced the seizure of 26,950 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) worth N19 million.
The operation, conducted over two weeks in Ogun and Lagos States, targeted petrol intended for smuggling out of the country.
The petrol was intercepted at various locations, including a fueling station along the Badagry – Seme Road in Lagos State, and three fueling stations along Imeko-Obada road of the Ilara – Iwoye Border, Owode-Atan road along the Idiroko border, as well as the Owode – Ilaro road in Ogun State.
The fuel stations involved were Seayab Petroleum, Quawiyan Resource Petroleum LTD, and Julanky Oil and Gas.
In a particularly significant seizure, a truck carrying 77 drums of PMS with a total capacity of 15,400 litres was intercepted in the bush along Imeko, Obada road on June 7, 2024. The driver of the truck is currently under protective custody.
Comptroller Ejibunu emphasized the need for truck owners to exercise caution when lending their vehicles to others, warning that they will be held accountable if their vehicles are used for smuggling activities.
He also issued a stern warning to those involved in petrol smuggling, urging them to desist or face the consequences.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Nigeria Customs Service will be collaborating with the Directorate of Petroleum Resources (DPR) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to ascertain whether the fuel stations involved were properly licensed.
If found to be in violation of the law, the owners of these stations will be prosecuted accordingly.
The successful interception of such a large quantity of smuggled petrol underscores the Nigeria Customs Service's commitment to combating illicit activities and protecting the nation's economic interests.
