Court convicts IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, on terrorism charges

A major twist emerged on Thursday in Nigeria’s long-running confrontation with separatist agitation as the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on three of the seven terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

Delivering the judgment, Presiding Judge James Omotosho ruled that the prosecution had successfully established a case against Kanu, relying heavily on video evidence in which the separatist leader allegedly issued violent threats against Nigeria and its citizens. The court held that the videos—played and tendered during trial—demonstrated clear intent to incite attacks and undermine national security.

Thursday’s ruling marks one of the most consequential moments in Kanu’s turbulent legal battle, which began with his 2015 arrest, subsequent bail in 2017, and dramatic re-arrest in 2021 after he fled the country. IPOB, which Kanu leads, has been proscribed as a terrorist organisation since 2017, following a series of violent clashes, sit-at-home orders, and attacks attributed to armed cells operating in the South-East.

Although the court discharged him on four other counts, the conviction on three terrorism-related charges is expected to trigger fierce political, legal, and regional reactions, especially in the South-East, where Kanu retains a significant following. The judgment also sets the stage for possible sentencing in the coming weeks, unless overturned on appeal.
