Cleric urges faithful not to allow anyone mislead them against themselves

By Josephine Obute

A Catholic cleric on Sunday, urged the christian faithful not to allow any individual or group turn citizens against themselves in the name of politics.

The cleric, Rev. Fr Andrew Abhulime, spoke during the church sermon at Saint Joachim and Anne Catholic church, Ijegun, Ikotun, a suburb of Lagos.

According to him, those who want to bring about disagreements between different ethnic or religious groups are not Christlike because true religion preaches unity.

He noted that these agents of disunity were doing so for their selfish purposes and not for good of the country.

“They want us to be fighting ourselves so that they can have time to commit more atrocities for their selfish interests.

“Jesus Christ called such people, ‘Foolish’ because they don’t recognize the essence of true discipleship through relationship with one another.

“Since the resurrection of Jesus Christ, He’s been revealing Himself to the disciples at different occasions, yet some did not recognize Him.

“We cannot recognize Jesus today because we are blinded by the worldly things that bring forth division and contempt,” he said.

According to the cleric, Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples today at the breaking of bread and their eyes were opened.

Abhulime added that “the concept of recognizing Jesus allows it to manifest in our daily lives and in the way we relate with our neighbors.”

He then called on everyone to demonstrate true discipleship with their relationship with one another at every point in time, irrespective of tribe or religion.
