Census 2023: Institute partner NPC to sensitise labour unions

The Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS) on Thursday in Ilorin collaborated with the National Population Commission (NPC) to sensitise the organised labour on imperative of national census.
Mr Issa Aremu, the Director General of the institute, pledged to support NPC on sensitising and mobilising Nigerians on the exercise.
Aremu recalled that the last census was conducted in 2006, describing the organised labour as the backbone of the nation.
He stated that MINILS is marking its 40th anniversary and would continue to ensure that Nigerian workers get valued intermediary of knowledge, literacy and understanding to further develop the nation.
Malam Nasir Kwarra, the Chairman of NPC, expressed appreciation to the institute on the partnership.
He explained that the population census is a people oriented project that required the cooperation and support of the people at every stage of implementation.
Kwarra submitted that creating awareness on the census and soliciting public support required public knowledge of the essential elements of the census.
He therefore observed that organised labour unions are foremost stakeholders as Nigerian workforce, while emphasising on their importance to the economic stability of the nation.
The NPC chairman noted the resilience of the organised labours, while historically relating their role in colonial and post colonial struggle and nation building.
According to him, the commission has achieved about 99.6 per cent coverage of the nation in terms of mobilisation and that four per cent could not be accessible as a result of insecurity.
Kwarra however said the commission would utilise its high level know-how to achieve success in accessing the remaining hard-to-reach areas.
