Brighton & Hove Albion have broken the bank for Nigerian teenage sensation Zadok Yohanna. The Premier League club paid £21.5m to AIK Stockholm for the 18-year-old winger.
Yohanna hails from Kaduna and only turned professional last year. His move to England marks a remarkable ascent for the young talent.
The fee makes him the costliest player ever transferred from Scandinavia to Europe's elite leagues. It also surpasses the Nigerian teenage transfer record previously held by John Obi Mikel.
Mikel's 2006 move from Lyn Oslo to Chelsea commanded less money than Brighton's investment in Yohanna. Both deals involved academy prospects leaving Scandinavian clubs.
Brighton saw off competition from Newcastle United and Chelsea to land the winger's signature. He's committed to a five-year contract through 2031.
Manager Fabian Hurzeler expressed enthusiasm about the arrival. According to him, Yohanna will integrate into the first team immediately.
"I'm looking forward to working with Zadok," Hurzeler told reporters. "Having seen his games and his attributes, he is a player that can impact games in the final third."
The Brighton boss acknowledged the adaptation period ahead. In his words: "He's still young, and will need time to adjust to the club and Premier League, but he's an exciting player to watch."
"He brings the kind of creativity our fans will enjoy," Hurzeler added. "His dynamic style, pace, and willingness to take defenders on strengthen our attacking department."
Yohanna himself expressed delight about joining English football. He views Brighton as the perfect environment for developing his craft.
Before the transfer, he'd netted five goals in 18 matches for AIK Stockholm. He also registered four assists during his brief Scandinavian spell.
His pedigree comes from the Ikon Allah Academy back home. Few expected such a dramatic move to happen so soon.
