Biden Struggles in First 2024 Presidential Debate Against Trump
In what was anticipated to be a critical moment for his re-election campaign, President Joe Biden faced a challenging performance in the first 2024 presidential debate against former President Donald Trump.
Held on Thursday evening, the debate highlighted concerns about Biden's age and fitness for office, with many viewers left unconvinced that these concerns were adequately addressed.
Throughout the 90-minute debate, Biden appeared flat and at times struggled to articulate clear and coherent responses.
The Biden campaign later attributed his raspy voice to a cold, but the explanation did little to alleviate the concerns of viewers who saw his performance as lackluster.

Former Biden communications director Kate Beddingfield acknowledged the president's disappointing performance, stating that he failed to demonstrate the energy and stamina required for the role.
Trump, on the other hand, delivered a more disciplined and focused performance than in previous debates. He successfully redirected discussions towards attacks on Biden's record and made several assertions that were not supported by facts or outright false.
Despite this, Biden struggled to effectively challenge Trump on these points, particularly in areas where Trump and Republicans have been vulnerable, such as the issue of abortion.
The debate also highlighted Biden's attempts to provoke Trump into angry responses, with some success.
At one point, Biden accused Trump of having "the morals of an alley cat," referencing Trump's conviction on charges related to an alleged romantic liaison with adult film star Stormy Daniels. Trump responded angrily, denying the allegations.
While Biden had some moments of success in challenging Trump, particularly on the issue of the January 6th Capitol attack, the overall impression left by the debate was one of a president struggling to maintain his footing against a more focused and aggressive opponent.
The early timing of this debate was seen as an attempt by the Biden team to shift focus to Trump earlier in the campaign season.
However, the immediate aftermath of the debate has seen more discussion about Biden's performance than Trump's.
The Democrats will have another opportunity to present a more scripted vision of a second Biden term at their August convention, and another debate is scheduled for September.
Whether these opportunities will be enough to overcome the impression left by this first debate remains to be seen.
