The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Ondo State Governor, Mr. Lucky Ayedatiwa, as the winner of the 2024 governorship election, securing a decisive victory across all 18 Local Government Areas of the state.
INEC announced Ayedatiwa, the candidate of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), as the governor-elect after he polled a total of 366,781 votes. He defeated his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 117,845 votes.
The State Returning Officer, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, made the final declaration on Sunday at the State Collation Centre in Akure. He affirmed, “Ayedatiwa Lucky Orimisan of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and governor-elect.”
The election recorded a total of 508,963 votes cast, out of which 497,077 were valid, while 11,886 votes were rejected. Ayedatiwa’s dominance was evident as he secured victories in all local government areas, including Idanre, the stronghold of the PDP’s deputy governorship candidate, Festus Akingbaso.
Despite claims of irregularities in areas such as Ofosun Oniseri and reports of ballot snatching in the Alade unit, INEC dismissed the allegations, citing insufficient evidence to alter the outcome.
The APC’s emphatic victory in key LGAs, including Akure North (14,451 votes to PDP’s 5,787) and Okitipupa (26,811 votes to PDP’s 10,233), solidified Ayedatiwa’s mandate. The governor-elect’s win is seen as a testament to his administration's impact during his first term, as voters overwhelmingly endorsed his leadership for another four years.
Before the final declaration of the results, all party agents present, including the PDP, signed the result sheet and each got a copy of the result.
