The city of Asaba will host the maiden edition of the Afrobeat Cultural Festival on August 1, 2026, as organisers seek to harness the influence of Afrobeat music and Nigerian music icon Davido to combat drug abuse, promote youth empowerment, celebrate African culture, and foster national unity.
The festival, themed "Celebrating the Impact of Davido on African Music, Youth Culture and National Unity," is being organised by Gateway to Better Life Foundation Inc. in collaboration with DASH Foundation Inc., USA, and the Davido International Supporters Group (DIS-G). The event is scheduled to take place at St. Patrick's College, Nnebisi Road, Asaba, beginning at 12 noon.
According to a statement jointly signed by the Convener, Ambassador (Rev.) Chukwudi Eke, and the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Comrade Sam Ijeh, the festival is designed to deploy the popularity and unifying power of Afrobeat music as a platform for social advocacy, particularly in the fight against drug abuse and other social vices affecting young people.
The organisers stated that the event would "utilise the Afrobeat genre of music to crusade against and intervene for victims of drug abuse and addiction, raising awareness and advocating a safer, healthier society." They explained that beyond entertainment, the festival is intended to inspire positive behavioural change while creating opportunities for youth development and cultural engagement.
Describing the event as the first of its kind, the organisers noted that it is a fan-driven cultural celebration inspired by the enduring legacy and global influence of award-winning Afrobeat superstar Davido.
According to the statement, the festival will feature a wide range of activities, including a Davido Legacy Recognition Session, cultural parade, talent discovery, youth empowerment initiatives, anti-drug awareness campaign, musical performances, community impact recognition, and a free medical outreach aimed at improving the wellbeing of participants.
A major highlight of the event will be the official unveiling of the Davido Legacy Book, a publication documenting the music star's contributions to African music, youth development, empowerment, and the global entertainment industry.
The organisers said the book chronicles Davido's remarkable influence on contemporary African music and his role in inspiring millions of young Africans through his artistry, philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and commitment to promoting African culture on the global stage.
The statement further disclosed that participants from the 25 local government areas of Delta State as well as visitors from other parts of Nigeria are expected to attend the cultural festival, which organisers believe will become an annual platform for celebrating African creativity while advancing social causes.
"A novel event, Afrobeat Cultural Festival, that seeks to leverage culture and Afrobeat to crusade against social vices, among other things, is being organised by Gateway to Better Life Foundation Inc., in collaboration with DASH Foundation Inc., USA and Davido International Supporters Group (DIS-G)," the organisers stated.
They added: "Specifically, the event aims at utilising the Afrobeat genre of music to crusade against and intervene for victims of drug abuse and addiction, raising awareness and advocating a safer, healthier society."
The organisers expressed optimism that the initiative would not only celebrate one of Africa's biggest music exports but also serve as a catalyst for youth empowerment, cultural preservation, public health advocacy, and national cohesion.
