Armed men believed to be kidnappers struck Ayegunle Bunu community in Kogi State's Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area early Monday. Two residents were killed and several others abducted in the assault.
The attack happened around 2:25 am on June 1, 2026. Gunfire erupted as the assailants invaded the community and blocked the main highway.
A community source, speaking anonymously, said residents woke to gunshots. "The gunmen shot and killed two residents and injured several others," the source told our correspondent.
Two people were taken from their homes during the raid. Commercial vehicle passengers who unknowingly approached the highway blockade were also seized.
Authorities are still working to establish the exact number of abductees. Details about the incident remain unclear, sources said.
Kogi State Police Command acknowledged the incident in a statement. Officers confirmed that operatives had been deployed to the area immediately.
Commissioner of Police Naziru Kankarofi announced that investigations have commenced. "We have deployed our men to the location," he noted.
Police Public Relations Officer ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat provided more specifics about casualties. According to her, a pastor was killed in his residence while another victim died inside a commercial vehicle.
Multiple residents sustained injuries during the gunfire exchange. Medical attention was provided to those hurt in the attack.
The highway blockade prevented residents from accessing neighbouring towns. Movement in and out of Ayegunle Bunu remained restricted following the assault.
Security agencies have intensified patrols in the affected area. Residents expressed fear and called for stronger protection measures in their community.
