Gunmen opened fire on police officers in Anambra State on Sunday night, killing at least two of them. The attackers remain unidentified.

The shooting happened along the Awa-Ndiukwuenu-Ufuma Road during a routine patrol. Armed men ambushed the policemen and fired multiple shots, leaving two bodies sprawled on the highway.

A keke tricycle operator witnessed the violence firsthand. He was riding when gunfire erupted ahead, forcing him to abandon his vehicle and sprint into the bush.

After the shooting stopped, he retrieved his tricycle and continued. When he reached the spot, he found two officers down and their police van parked nearby.

The keke driver recorded a voice note documenting what he saw. He urged anyone with connections to police authorities to alert them quickly, saying one officer appeared to still be alive.

"Two policemen are lying on the road here, and their police van is parked by the road side," he said in the recording. "I think one of the policemen is still alive, so that anyone who knows police authorities will tell them to go and save their members."

Anambra had enjoyed months of relative calm following aggressive operations against armed gangs. Sunday's attack marks a worrying return to violence in the state.

The Anambra State Police Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, did not respond when contacted for comment. No official statement had been released by press time.
