The movement for the creation of Anioma State has hit a major breakthrough, securing the endorsement of over 90 Senators—well above the constitutional requirement for state creation.
With 23 more than the required two-thirds majority (67 Senators), the proposed Anioma State is closer than ever to becoming Nigeria’s 37th state, riding on a wave of bipartisan momentum in the 10th National Assembly.
Among the high-profile supporters are Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, Minority Leader Abba Moro, former Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu, ex-Governors Adams Oshiomhole and Seriake Dickson, as well as Senator Victor Umeh.
The push is being championed by Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, who on May 27, 2025, formally wrote to the Senate President seeking broad-based backing for the move.
“The Anioma State proposal is anchored on principles of national development, equity, justice, and federal balance,” Nwoko stated in the letter, now part of Senate Bill 481 under review in the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
The scale of support—cutting across party lines and geopolitical zones—has sparked optimism among political observers that the Anioma State agenda could gain wider national traction and eventually scale through both legislative hurdles and public approval.
With momentum building and advocacy efforts intensifying, Anioma’s long quest for statehood may be entering its final lap.
