Anambra State Government Shuts Down Illegal Baby Factory, Rescues Pregnant Teenagers

The Anambra State Government, in collaboration with security operatives, has successfully raided a baby factory and rescued six pregnant teenagers.

The operation took place on Wednesday at Umunya in the Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

Dr. Afam Obidike, the state Commissioner for Health, revealed that the baby factory, operating under the name “Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity,” was not registered with the state government.

The facility was located at No 1, School Road, Tansian University in Umunya.

Upon the arrival of the state’s Health Facility, Accreditation and Monitoring Unit for a routine inspection, the nurses at the facility locked up and ran away after being asked to present the doctor on duty.

Security operatives, including OCHA-Brigade, the Civil Defence Corps, and the Police, later assisted the monitoring team in gaining access to the facility.

The shocking discovery revealed six underaged pregnant girls, between the ages of 14 and 21, allegedly being held against their wishes.

The girls claimed that a self-acclaimed doctor, Mr. Odili Ossai from Delta State, was selling the babies after they delivered them.

Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, and the police will carry out further investigation.

Dr. Obidike reaffirmed Gov. Charles Soludo’s administration’s commitment to stamping out fake and quack hospitals in the state.

The Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit has established an Illegal and Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team to eliminate illegal and unethical practices within health facilities and enhance the quality of healthcare services in the state.

The state government is determined to eliminate all illegal health facilities and quackery. They have also built a database and website where people can easily access approved and registered health facilities in the state.

The Director of medical services, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, has cautioned other fake and quack doctors operating in the state to shut down immediately or face the full wrath of the law.

Residents of the state are encouraged to report any illegal activities, malpractices, or concerns related to healthcare services in the state.
