Bishop Emeka Nwankpa faces court charges in Anambra State. The NDC senatorial candidate for Abia Central was arraigned alongside seven other pastors.
Authorities accuse them of conducting fake miracles and false prophecies. Nwankpa leads a Pentecostal church based in Onitsha.
His media spokesman, Stanley Nduagu, rejected the charges outright. According to him, Nwankpa has maintained integrity throughout 25 years of ministry.
Nduagu noted the allegations lack any credible evidence. He called the arrest unjustified and politically motivated.
People from Isiala Ngwa in Abia State have rallied behind the cleric. Community members are demanding his immediate release from custody.
One resident, Ngozi Ahunanya, accused the Anambra government of targeting believers. She said authorities are waging war against Christians and traditional worshippers.
Francess Olisa Ogbonnaya, ADC candidate for Arochukwu, also condemned the action. In her view, it amounts to needless harassment of church leaders and their congregations.
The case has drawn criticism from multiple quarters. Many see it as political persecution ahead of elections.
