Akwukwu-Igbo, headquarters of Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, came alive in a powerful show of pride and unity as the community honoured one of its outstanding daughters, Miss Chelsea Amaka Iweanyi, for her exemplary leadership, service to humanity and commitment to community development.
The grand reception and public lecture, held on Friday, December 5, 2025, at the Akwukwu-Igbo Town Hall, attracted a large gathering of youths, elders and community leaders who converged to celebrate Miss Iweanyi and engage with the lecture delivered by the guest speaker, Prof. (Mrs.) Joyce Ogho Ogwezi, a renowned communication scholar and Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai, Asaba.
Chairman of the occasion, Chief Dr. Newton Jibunoh, the Nnaobodo of Akwukwu-Igbo, conveyed the royal blessings of His Royal Majesty, Obi (Dr.) David Azuka, the Obi of Akwukwu-Igbo, described the event as a reaffirmation of the community’s tradition of rewarding excellence and discouraging negative conduct.
Chief Jibunoh praised Miss Iweanyi for bringing honour to Akwukwu-Igbo, urging her to remain focused and purposeful, noting that she has become a symbol of hope and a torchbearer entrusted with greater responsibility.
Delivering a thought-provoking lecture titled “Value Reconstruction and Civic Responsibility: A Catalyst for Sustainable Community Development,” Prof. Ogwezi stressed that rebuilding societal values is critical to fostering rational thinking, strengthening communal bonds, encouraging civic participation and promoting healthy social interaction.
She warned against the indiscriminate sale of ancestral lands to non-indigenes, cautioning that such practices could undermine cultural heritage and deprive future generations of their inheritance. She urged the community to adopt long-term, generational thinking in safeguarding its values and assets.
Prof. Ogwezi also commended Miss Iweanyi’s courage and resilience, encouraging her to remain steadfast and undistracted in the pursuit of her ideals.
In his remarks, President-General of the Akwukwu-Igbo Community Development Association, Chief Ikechukwu Iwegbu, congratulated the honouree and charged youths of the community to emulate her character and dedication to service.
Earlier, Chairman of the Organising Committee and Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Delta State Chapter, Mr. Godfrey Osakwe, fnipr, said the lecture theme was timely, emphasising the urgent need for value rebirth and character regeneration among Nigerian youths.
He noted that the celebration was inspired not only by Miss Iweanyi’s exemplary conduct but also by her outstanding service during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in Kaduna State, where she rebuilt a clinic at her place of primary assignment—a feat that earned her a prestigious national award presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
Mr. Osakwe urged young people to embrace positive ventures, uphold strong values and remain focused despite social or economic challenges.
Also speaking, Mr. Daniel Anazia, a 2025 Mandela Washington Fellow, encouraged youths to leverage digital tools for personal growth and community impact, urging them to position themselves as agents of transformational leadership.
In an emotional address, Miss Iweanyi recounted her journey marked by hardship, sacrifice and unshakeable faith, attributing her achievements to resilience, determination and trust in God.
She highlighted the work of her non-governmental organisation, which focuses on the rehabilitation of drug addicts, advocacy for unpaid workers and support for children’s education through the provision of learning materials. She encouraged youths to remain resilient and faith-driven as they pursue their aspirations.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of gifts to the honouree and the launch of a Plastic Recycling Receptacle Initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability within Akwukwu-Igbo and neighbouring communities.
The ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries, including Chief Sunny Okonta, the Odogwu of Akwukwu-Igbo; Her Royal Highness, Omu Grace Ekwutoziam Osibe, the Omu of Akwukwu-Igbo; Rev.
