AFCON 2023: Sadiq Remains Doubtful for Equatorial Guinea Clash

Sadiq Umar, the Nigerian forward, is still doubtful for the Super Eagles’ opening match against Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to an injury sustained in a friendly match against Guinea.

The 26-year-old striker was forced to leave the game and has since been undergoing treatment.

The Super Eagles’ coach, Jose Peseiro, is closely monitoring Sadiq’s recovery, but the Real Sociedad forward may not be fit in time for the crucial match against Equatorial Guinea on January 11th, 2024.

With Victor Osimhen being the only fit striker available for the game, Peseiro might have to rely on other players to fill the void left by Sadiq’s absence.

In the meantime, the Nigerian Football Federation has extended a late call-up to Paul Onuachu to replace Sadiq Umar. Onuachu, who plays for Genk in Belgium, is expected to join the Super Eagles camp soon.

The injury to Sadiq has dealt a blow to Nigeria’s attacking options, but the team remains focused on the task ahead.

The Super Eagles are determined to make a strong start in the tournament and will be looking to secure a victory against Equatorial Guinea in their opening match.
