The African Democratic Congress in Kebbi State has accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of targeting former Attorney General Abubakar Malami to stop him from running for governor. The party made the claim in a statement released on Sunday and signed by Kebbi ADC chairman Sufiyanu Bala and Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Sambawa.
According to the ADC, the federal government is using the courts to frighten opposition politicians at all levels. The party argues these tactics aim to scare rivals away from contesting in the 2027 elections.
"By 12 noon in 2027, their party is gone. That is why they are intimidating strong opposition figures who appear poised to replace them, particularly Malami, who is being persecuted through the judiciary," the statement read.
The ADC claimed the Kebbi State Government is also working to wreck Malami's governorship bid through intimidation. Officials insisted nothing would stop his candidacy in 2027.
The party further alleged that seizing Malami's assets forms part of a joint plan by both the Federal Government and Kebbi authorities to intimidate the former minister. It said the move represents coordinated political persecution against the opposition figure.
Despite facing what it described as court cases and political attacks, the ADC expressed confidence Malami would win. The party believed the judiciary would overturn recent rulings against him.
The statement reflects growing tensions between the ruling government and opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. Multiple opposition figures have recently made accusations of persecution and intimidation by the Tinubu administration.
