The African Democratic Congress has named Idris Gatumbwa Mamman Durkwa as its consensus candidate for Borno South Senatorial District ahead of 2027.
Durkwa will face off against incumbent Senator Ali Ndume, who got the APC ticket for a fifth consecutive term.
Before joining ADC, Durkwa ran for Borno governor on the APC platform. Victory would dislodge the outspoken lawmaker from office.
Two other senatorial hopefuls were screened the same day. Fugu Ibrahim and Babagana Zanna are ADC's picks for Borno North and Central respectively.
Mohammed Umar Bolori, the party's Organising Secretary, addressed journalists after the screening exercise concluded.
According to him, Durkwa emerged through a consensus process favoured by party leadership. "He was presented to reposition ADC's unity, growth, and electoral success in southern Borno, the state and beyond," Bolori noted.
The party screened three gubernatorial aspirants for primary contests, he added. House of Representatives aspirants also went through screening where consensus arrangements didn't apply.
ADC hopes the move strengthens its position in Nigeria's Northeast ahead of next year's polls. Party officials believe Durkwa's previous gubernatorial ambition brings valuable experience to the race.
