Abuja Light Rail Nears Completion: Set for Inauguration in May 2024

The Abuja Light Rail Scheme is set to be inaugurated next month after reaching an impressive 97% completion.

The announcement was made by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, during an inspection tour of the renovation and rehabilitation works on the network from Metro Station to Airport Train Station.

Expressing satisfaction with the rehabilitation exercise, Minister Nyesom Wike emphasized the crucial role of the metro line in boosting the FCT’s economy.

“We are almost 97 percent. All the works are going on to make sure that May is a reality,” he said.

He also highlighted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the schedule for the commissioning of projects to mark his one-year office, with the Abuja Light Rail Scheme being a top priority.

The completion of the Abuja Light Rail Scheme marks a significant achievement in Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure.

According to Wike, the metro line offers a more convenient travel option for commuters, particularly when traveling to the airport.

He expressed confidence that the project would be inaugurated as planned, describing it as a “dream come true” that will benefit Nigerians starting May 2024.

Addressing concerns over operational costs and training of personnel, Minister Nyesom Wike reassured that the FCT Administration has fulfilled its contractual obligations to the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

He acknowledged the costs involved in such a project but emphasized the importance of balancing cost savings with the interest of the FCT.

Regarding the extension of rail services to other densely populated areas within the FCT, such as Nyanya, the Minister acknowledged that such projects would be considered in phases due to financial constraints.

He assured that development efforts would continue to ensure the best interests of the FCT and its residents.

With the inauguration of the Abuja Light Rail Scheme scheduled for next month, the project stands as a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to improving its transportation infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
