MTN Nigeria acquires 2.6GHz spectrum to boost broadband services

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, the leading telecommunications operator in the country, has announced that it has acquired a 10 MHz frequency division duplex (FDD) in the 2.6 GHz spectrum band from OpenSkys Services Limited, a subsidiary of Smile Communications. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved the transfer and assignment of the spectrum licence on September 7, 2023, and it is valid until April 16, 2033.

The 2.6 GHz spectrum band is designated for the deployment of terrestrial mobile broadband services, which can provide high-speed internet access and data services to millions of Nigerians.

MTN Nigeria said that the acquisition of the additional spectrum will enable it to enhance its network capacity and improve customer experience, as well as support the Federal Government’s plan to deepen broadband penetration in Nigeria.
