Nigeria’s petroleum sector is set for a significant leap as plans are unveiled for the construction of a 50,000 barrels per day (bpd) refinery in Akwa Ibom State. This initiative, driven by the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) in collaboration with Claridge Petroleum Company Ltd, Oasis Petrochemical Products Limited, and Afrintech, is expected to reduce Nigeria's dependence on imported refined products and ensure affordable fuel for citizens.
The project aligns with Senator Ned Nwoko’s persistent advocacy for strengthening local production to achieve economic sovereignty. Representing Delta North Senatorial District, a region with six oil-producing local government areas, Senator Nwoko has championed policies to increase Nigeria's refining capacity, create jobs, and stabilize the Naira by reducing reliance on imports.
Senator Nwoko’s legislative efforts have been pivotal in addressing the challenges in Nigeria’s petroleum sector. His motion, “Need to Investigate the Incessant and Nefarious Acts of Crude Oil Thefts in the Niger Delta and Its Actors,” highlighted the need to legalize artisanal refining to increase the supply of refined products and ensure affordability for Nigerians. Additionally, his proposed bill to restrict foreign currency transactions and his motion to ban the importation of non-essential goods underscore his commitment to bolstering local production.
“This refinery project in Akwa Ibom is a testament to the potential of prioritizing local refining,” Senator Nwoko has stated. “Nigeria’s economic sovereignty depends on the capacity to produce locally. Strengthening the petroleum sector with modular and standard refineries is a critical step toward reducing our reliance on foreign imports, creating jobs, and boosting the Naira.”
The refinery’s establishment marks a significant milestone in achieving this vision, alongside the modernization of existing refineries and the development of modular facilities. These efforts align with Senator Nwoko’s broader call for economic policies that empower local industries and promote self-reliance.
Senator Nwoko’s vision extends beyond oil refining to include creating an enabling environment for investments in refinery development, ensuring policy consistency, and driving local production across all sectors. “This is the time to consolidate on these gains and ensure Nigeria becomes a hub of productivity, not just a consumer-driven economy,” he emphasized.
The Akwa Ibom refinery, once operational, will represent a turning point in the country’s journey toward a sustainable and independent petroleum sector. It reinforces Senator Nwoko’s long-term vision of an economically resilient Nigeria, where citizens benefit from the nation’s vast resources.
