The Edo State Police Command has detained a 16-year-old girl, Aisha Suleiman, on suspicion of fatally poisoning her ex-boyfriend, Emmanuel, along with four other young men in the Afashio community of Etsako West Local Government Area, Edo State.
The tragic events unfolded on October 26, 2024, when Emmanuel’s father, Mr. Elogie Ezekiel, discovered the lifeless bodies of his son and four others in Emmanuel's apartment early that morning.
Ezekiel reportedly found the body of a young man, Nurudeen, in the corridor and subsequently found Emmanuel, 19, along with his girlfriend, Ada Samuel, also 16, in the bedroom. Samuel and Jeffrey Ayegwalo, two siblings and friends of Emmanuel, were found unresponsive in the sitting room.
Community sources reported that the five victims had recently shared a pot of pepper soup prepared by Suleiman, raising suspicions about possible poisoning.
Three days later, community members allegedly attempted to lynch Suleiman after rumors surfaced linking her to the incident. Police from the Jattu Division intervened swiftly to rescue Suleiman and transported her to the station.
State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Moses Yamu, confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation. Commissioner of Police, CP Umoru Ozigi, has called for a detailed inquiry and urged the community to refrain from mob actions, assuring that the investigation will be conducted with full diligence to uncover the truth.
