A fatal crash at Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport in Damaturu claimed one life on Thursday. Sixteen others sustained injuries in the accident.
Governor Mai Mala Buni and APC governorship aspirant Baba Malam Wali had just arrived at the airport. They were returning from successful screening in Abuja.
Thousands of party supporters gathered for a welcome rally organised by the Coalition of Yobe Political Associations. The event drew attendees from all 17 local government areas across the state.
Eyewitnesses said the crash happened around 6:30pm. Overspeeding and heavy traffic congestion within the airport premises caused the accident.
Yobe State Emergency Medical Ambulance Service (YEMABUS) responders quickly secured the scene. They administered first aid and evacuated all victims.
One person died at the accident site. Emergency teams rushed the 16 injured victims to Yobe State University Teaching Hospital.
Dr Mohammed Lawan Lamusawa, YEMABUS Executive Secretary, confirmed the incident to reporters. He said all victims received emergency care before transport to the hospital.
Lamusawa blamed reckless driving and excessive speed for the tragedy. He noted that airport congestion also played a role in the crash.
The official called on all motorists to follow traffic rules strictly. According to him, such accidents are completely preventable with discipline on the road.
Lamusawa expressed condolences to the deceased's family. He wished those injured a speedy and full recovery.
Governor Buni visited the hospital to see injured victims later that day. He sympathised with the family of the person who died.
The governor prayed for quick recovery of those still receiving treatment. Acting Secretary to the State Government Dr Mohammed Goje accompanied him.
Several top government officials joined Buni during the hospital visit. The gesture showed the administration's concern for affected residents.
