Wike Launches School Rehabilitation Projects in FCT, Promises Quality Education

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Nyesom Wike, has initiated the reconstruction and total rehabilitation of 19 schools in the nation’s capital.

He recently flagged off the projects and promised not to owe any contractors while the projects are in progress.

Wike emphasized the importance of a proper, conducive, and habitable learning environment and disclosed that the schools’ rehabilitation will be funded from the 2023 Supplementary Budget.

Additionally, another 20 schools will be rehabilitated later this year from the recently passed 2024 budget of the FCT.

During the event, the minister thanked all stakeholders and students, reassuring them that their expectations would be met.

He stressed the importance of providing quality education alongside access to education, stating that the FCT administration is also looking into the provision of quality teachers to teach the students.

The Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, stated that children deserve the best of learning environments, which is why the schools’ rehabilitation and reconstruction project is crucial.

In his address, the mandate secretary of the Education Secretariat, Danlami Hayyo, disclosed that the minister had approved the sum of N280m as a scholarship for over 130,000 indigent students of the FCT, across all levels of education.

He added that the schools’ rehabilitation initiative is about laying the foundation for the children’s future.

One of the contractors handling the rehabilitation projects, Engr. Osondu Ekeekwu, informed the minister that, upon taking over the site, the only structures in good shape were the Mosque and Church auditoriums rehabilitated by private individuals.

He also mentioned that, during school vacations, the school premises are often taken over by herdsmen, making it unfit for use on resumption.

Ekeekwu promised, on behalf of other contractors, that they would do a good job and deliver the projects within the time frame.
