‘We Haven’t Had Light For Over 10 Years’ – Port Harcourt Airport Host Communities Protest Over Neglect, Disrupts Flight Services

Residents of Omagwa and Ipo communities in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State have taken to the streets to protest against the neglect and lack of essential amenities in their area.

The protest has caused disruptions to flight operations at the Port Harcourt International Airport, with air travelers left stranded and a gridlock forming on the Airport Road and extending to neighboring communities.

The protesters, who gathered as early as 7 am on Wednesday, voiced their frustration over the absence of power supply for over 10 years, the lack of compensation for hosting the international airport, and the daily noise pollution that they have to endure.

They also highlighted the inadequacy of schools in the area, accusing the airport authorities of neglect.

“We in Omagwa and Ipo haven’t had light for over 10 years,” said Oki, a protester. “We want compensation for the noise pollution coming from the airport every day.

We are tired. That is why we are here.”

The protest has brought attention to the plight of the host communities, who feel that their needs have been ignored for far too long.

It remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to the demands of the protesters and whether the disruptions to flight services will be resolved in a timely manner.

As the situation unfolds, it is essential to keep an eye on the developments in the Port Harcourt Airport Host Communities’ protest and the potential long-term consequences for the region and its residents.
