University of Jos VC Orders Security to Break Down Gate Locked by Protesting SSANU Members Amid Warning Strike

In the midst of a one-week warning strike by the Senior Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, ordered security to break open the gate of the university, which had been locked by protesting non-teaching staff members.

The non-teaching university staff members are protesting against alleged unfair treatment and disparity in the payment of their salaries by the Nigerian Government.

On Monday, March 18, 2024, the staff members locked the school gate with a padlock to halt academic activities at the institution.

When Prof. Ishaya arrived at the University of Jos with armed policemen, he did not allow the locked gate to hinder his entrance.

As the protesting workers chanted solidarity songs, the vice-chancellor’s security broke the gate to allow him to drive into the campus.

The warning strike, which began on Monday, March 18, has caused disruptions to the academic activities at the University of Jos and other Nigerian universities.

The non-teaching staff members are demanding that the government address the salary disparity and other issues affecting their welfare.

The incident at the University of Jos highlights the ongoing tensions between the Nigerian Government and non-teaching university staff members.

It remains to be seen how the government will respond to the demands of the protesting workers and whether a resolution can be reached to end the strike and resume normal academic activities.
