The University of Calabar has suspended 19 students for one academic session following exam malpractice allegations. The disciplinary action, approved by the university's Senate, takes effect from the 2025/2026 academic year.

Dr Citizen Ekpo, the director of administration, signed the suspension letter on behalf of registrar Dr Chukwuka Icha. The Students' Disciplinary Committee recommended the action after investigating the students involved.

Effiong Eyo, head of the university's public relations unit, confirmed the suspensions when contacted. He explained that affected students would return to campus for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The suspended students come from across multiple faculties at the institution. These include Administration, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Arts, Education, Allied Medical Sciences, Pharmacy and Environmental Sciences.

Departments represented among those suspended include Nursing Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, Science Laboratory Technology, Estate Management and Marketing, according to Eyo. Several other related departments also had students affected by the disciplinary measure.

UNICAL has directed all deans, department heads and relevant units to implement the suspension immediately. The university stressed the importance of full compliance with the directive across all faculties and departments.
