Tinubu Urged to Enact Child Rights Act to Combat Child Slavery in Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has been urged to enact the Child Rights Act into law as a means to discourage child slavery in Nigeria.

The call came from the founder of the Akhin Foundation, a civil society organization that fights against child labour, Mr. Israel Balogun, during a leisure train trip for over 40 indigent children from Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo State.

Balogun highlighted the urgent need for the government to take stringent measures against those engaging in child slavery.

He pointed out that while the children of these individuals are often privileged to attend school, they subject other children to various forms of child labour, including being used as housemaids, hawkers, and scavengers.

The Akhin Foundation is set to collaborate with the Department for State Services (DSS) to report any instances of child labour.

Balogun emphasized that no child should be exploited or used as a slave, and that a child rights law must be imposed to protect the rights of Nigerian children.

The call for the enactment of the Child Rights Act into law comes as a response to the ongoing issue of child labour in Nigeria.

The government’s efforts to address this issue are crucial in ensuring that the rights of children are protected and that they are provided with the opportunity to have a bright future.

As President Tinubu begins his tenure, the responsibility falls on his administration to prioritize the enactment of the Child Rights Act and to take concrete steps to combat child slavery in Nigeria.

The hope is that with the implementation of this law, the country will move closer to ensuring a safer and more secure environment for its children.
