There Won’t Be Any Food Security Without Proper Soil Management: NISS

The Nigeria Institute of Soil Science (NISS) has recently emphasized the importance of proper soil management for achieving food security in Nigeria.

During a recent sensitization program at Community Secondary School, Alor Uno, Nsukka, the South East Co-ordinator of NISS, Prof. Charles Asadu, highlighted the various job opportunities available in the field of Soil Science.

According to Asadu, the future of generations unborn will be at risk if we do not manage our soils properly. He stressed that farmers need to understand the different types of soils in order to determine which crops will grow best in each type.

Moreover, he debunked the myth that farming is only for the poor, explaining that agriculture has evolved and now incorporates advanced techniques and technologies.

The NISS representative also pointed out that there are numerous job opportunities in Soil Science, including working in research institutes, oil and gas industries, fertilizer and agrochemical industries, higher education institutions, and construction companies, among others.

The purpose of the NISS’s school visit was to raise awareness among secondary school students, particularly those in SS1-SS3, about the various career opportunities in Soil Science.

The institute believes that many people are unaware of the range of job prospects available in this field.

The principal of Community Secondary School, Alor Uno, Cosmas Odo, praised the NISS’s efforts, stating that both staff and students have become more knowledgeable about the importance of soil management and the profession of Soil Science.

In response, students at the school expressed their gratitude for the insights they had gained and indicated that they would consider a career in Soil Science when choosing their university courses.

By highlighting the significance of soil management and the diverse job opportunities available in the field of Soil Science, the NISS is not only promoting food security but also encouraging students to explore careers in this essential discipline.
