The Delta State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on drug cartels and illegal drug distribution networks following the death of a 15-year-old boy who allegedly abused a controlled substance, prompting renewed warnings to youths across the state.

The victim, identified as Gift Oberhirhi, reportedly ingested about 15 tablets of Dexamethasone—allegedly supplied by his friend, Destiny Akpofure, also 15, without a medical prescription, leading to his sudden illness and eventual death while being rushed for treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Command’s spokesperson, Edafe Bright, disclosed in a statement that police operatives from Orogun Division responded promptly, visited the scene, and evacuated the body to the General Hospital Mortuary in Orogun for autopsy.

He added that the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

The police described the development as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with the misuse of drugs, particularly among young people, noting that the illegal distribution of both controlled and hard substances continues to pose serious public safety risks.

“This incident reflects the grave consequences of drug abuse and underscores the urgent need to dismantle networks involved in the unlawful sale and distribution of such substances,” the statement noted.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi John Oyeniyi, has ordered intensified intelligence-led operations targeting drug dens, criminal hideouts, and other blackspots across the state.

The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, warning that it would sustain efforts to curb drug-related crimes, including cultism and violent activities often linked to substance abuse.

Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, particularly the sale and use of illicit drugs, to the nearest police station for prompt action.

Police authorities say the ongoing operations are part of broader efforts to prevent avoidable deaths and restore safety in communities increasingly threatened by drug abuse.
