Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has stepped aside from his senatorial bid in Sokoto South. The former governor announced his withdrawal from the African Democratic Congress ticket.
Tambuwal made way for Faruk Malami Yabo to contest instead. Yabo, a former state commissioner, emerged as the ADC's choice for the seat.
Ibrahim Lamido, the Sokoto East senator, also pulled out of the race. Party stakeholders had brokered a reconciliation deal that led to both withdrawals.
ADC officials haven't yet named who will represent Sokoto East at the national level. Sources within the party say an announcement could come soon.
Mani Mainshinku, a House of Representatives member from Silame-Binji, is positioned to clinch the Sokoto Central slot. Party insiders expect his nomination to sail through smoothly.
Neither Tambuwal nor Lamido gave public reasons for stepping back. Their decisions surprised many political watchers in the state.
Alhaji Lamir Ameen, ADC's state spokesperson, confirmed both withdrawals on behalf of the party. According to him, the move opens doors for younger politicians to contest.
"We want to create space for new generation leaders," Ameen told reporters. He noted that most party nominees for House seats are youths.
The party sees this as promoting inclusiveness in Nigerian politics. It's also meant to energize young voters, he added.
Ameen urged party members to unite ahead of elections. He called for collective efforts to guarantee ADC's electoral victory.
Party supporters have largely welcomed the development. Many view it as a genuine commitment to refreshing political leadership.
