The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action in the case of abducted journalist Segun Olatunji. Olatunji, the editor of FirstNews, was reportedly arrested by soldiers in Lagos, Nigeria.

SERAP has given President Tinubu a 48-hour ultimatum to secure Olatunji’s release, or face legal action.

SERAP, a prominent Nigerian human rights organization, took to X to express their concerns and demands.

They stated, “BREAKING: The Tinubu administration must immediately release Segun Olatunji, editor of FirstNews who was reportedly arrested in Lagos by the military.

Journalists should never be arrested for doing their job. We’ll see in court if he is not released within 48 hours. @officialABAT”

The abduction of Segun Olatunji occurred on Friday at his residence in the Iyana Odo, Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

This case has garnered significant attention, as it raises concerns about press freedom and human rights in Nigeria.

The management of FirstNews has expressed their worries regarding the safety of their staff and the implications of this event on the freedom of the press.

SERAP’s threat of legal action against President Tinubu underscores the urgency of the situation and the importance of protecting journalists and upholding the fundamental principles of democracy.

As the deadline approaches, the world watches closely to see how President Tinubu will respond to SERAP’s demands and whether Segun Olatunji will be released safely.

As the situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for press freedom and human rights in Nigeria and the critical role that journalists play in holding those in power accountable.
