Senator Ned Nwoko, Chairman of the Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft, has called for a public hearing on the rising menace of oil theft in the Niger Delta, emphasizing the need for a transparent and inclusive approach to tackling the crisis.
The public hearing, scheduled for April 28–29, 2025, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, will bring together key stakeholders, including government agencies, security forces, oil companies, and local communities, to address the economic, environmental, and security challenges posed by oil theft.
Nwoko highlighted the devastating impact of crude oil theft on Nigeria’s economy and the Niger Delta region, where illegal bunkering has led to environmental destruction, loss of government revenue, and deep-seated corruption. He stressed that without a collective, structured intervention, the problem would persist.
“The theft of crude oil is not just an economic issue but a major security and environmental crisis. It is time for all stakeholders to come together and find sustainable solutions,” he stated.
The senator also questioned the role of security forces in the region, noting that despite their presence, oil theft continues to thrive. He called for greater accountability from oil companies, urging them to invest in secure infrastructure and engage with host communities to curb sabotage.
Institutions invited to the hearing include the NNPC Limited, CBN, NUPRC, NIMASA, NPA, Nigerian Customs, security agencies such as the Armed Forces, DSS, NSCDC, Police, and industry stakeholders like NEITI, IOCs, OML operators, and crude oil lifters.
Nwoko’s call for action comes amid renewed efforts to combat crude oil theft, which has cost Nigeria billions in lost revenue. He believes the hearing will serve as a platform to develop long-term strategies that protect national resources and ensure equitable benefits for all Nigerians.
