The Senate has formally announced the defection of Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His move follows his recent resignation from the opposition party, citing internal crises and instability within the PDP.
Nwoko, in his statement before the Senate, revealed that he left the PDP due to what he described as a lack of space to function, attributing this to the leadership of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
According to Channels TV, Nwoko was met with thunderous chants as he was escorted to the majority wing of the Upper Chamber, solidifying his new political allegiance.
Beyond his defection, the senator called on the Senate to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate the ongoing crisis within the PDP. In a correspondence read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Nwoko stressed the need for a viable opposition to maintain Nigeria’s democratic balance and safeguard the country’s political landscape.
His defection marks a significant shift in Delta State politics and adds to the growing realignments ahead of future elections.
