Senate to Impose Sanctions on MDAs Rejecting People with Disability

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District and the Senate Chief Whip, announced on Wednesday that the Senate is working on imposing strict sanctions against the rejection of people living with disabilities.

This move comes as a response to the discrimination and refusal of some Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to engage persons with disabilities, despite their qualifications.

Ndume expressed his concerns while being honored by the FCT Para-soccer Team in Abuja.

He emphasized the need to amend the laws establishing the National Commission for Persons with Disability to ensure the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workforce.

He believes that they should be employed in their field of study to contribute to the system.

The Senator also announced his donation of N1 million to the FCT Para-soccer Team, which has been representing Nigeria for over 30 years.

He promised to arrange a meeting with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to garner further support for the team.

Ndume highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to his Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to provide opportunities and support for all Nigerians, including those with disabilities.

The Senator also proposed making it mandatory for every MDA to employ people with disabilities, giving them opportunities to become chief executives and permanent secretaries.

He pointed out that a disabled senator had previously served as the Chief Whip, demonstrating that people with disabilities can excel in leadership roles.

The proposed legislation is expected to bring significant changes in the way MDAs treat people with disabilities, promoting inclusion and equal opportunities for all.
