Senate Passes National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Trust Fund Bill

The Senate has recently passed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Trust Fund Bill, which aims to provide a sustainable source of funds for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The bill, sponsored by Senator Yemi Adaramodu, who represents Ekiti South and chairs the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, seeks to improve the overall experience of the NYSC program for both corps members and personnel.

If signed into law, the bill will ensure the funding of the NYSC’s skill acquisition, training, and empowerment of corps members, as well as the training and retraining of the personnel of the scheme.

It will also facilitate the development of camps and NYSC formations and facilities across the country.

Senator Adaramodu, while presenting the lead debate on the bill, emphasized the importance of the bill in making graduates acquire skills under the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Programs.

He also noted that the bill will ensure the development of corps members and improve their welfare, as well as the personnel of the NYSC.

The National Youth Service Corps, established in May 1973, has played a crucial role in instilling patriotism and the spirit of nationalism in Nigerian youth.

However, this is the first attempt to amend the enabling Act to ensure that Nigerians benefit from the establishment of the NYSC.

The passage of the NYSC Trust Fund Bill by the Senate marks a significant step towards enhancing the National Youth Service Corps program, which will ultimately contribute to the development of the Nigerian youth and the nation as a whole.

The bill will now be sent to the House of Representatives for concurrence, and if passed, will be forwarded to the President for assent.
