Sanusi II Reinstated as Emir of Kano: Governor Yusuf Signs New Law

Sanusi II has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano, following the signing of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 by Governor Abba Yusuf.
This move comes after the governor dissolved the Kano Emirates created by the previous administration, effectively reversing the dethronement of Sanusi II by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2020.
The reinstatement ceremony took place at the Government House in Kano, where Sanusi II received his letter of appointment.
Governor Yusuf emphasized the Emir’s role in leading according to Islamic tenets and urged him to foster harmony among the Islamic sects in the state.
The new law signed by Governor Yusuf replaces the Kano State Emirates Council Law, 2019, which was used by Ganduje to split the Kano Emirate into five in December 2019.
The emirates created by the Ganduje administration were Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya, in addition to Kano.
Governor Yusuf, who had earlier signed the bill into law, stated that the move was a restoration of what was due to the good people of the state.
He also thanked the legislative body for the bill’s speedy passage, which he said was a testament to their interest in the welfare of the people of the state.
Following the new law, Governor Yusuf gave the emirs who were in charge of the dissolved emirates 48 hours to leave their palaces.
This move has effectively restored the over 1,000-year-old Kano Emirate to its original pre-2019 status.
Sanusi II, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was known as Lamido Sanusi before becoming king.
His reinstatement has been met with widespread support, with Governor Yusuf emphasizing that it was a case of victimization in 2019.
The Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 has paved the way for the reinstatement of Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, marking a significant moment in the state’s history.
