Rivers State University has launched a major digital push in its host community. On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Vice Chancellor Isaac Zeb-Obipi commissioned the Nkpolu-Oroworukwo ICT Centre at the community town hall.

Zeb-Obipi, a professor of Management studies and the university's 12th Vice Chancellor, is also a respected academic and traditional ruler. He said the facility marks the institution's commitment to bringing innovation beyond campus walls.

The centre aims to strengthen digital capacity in the Niger Delta community. It will promote inclusive learning and expand economic opportunities for residents.

In his remarks, Zeb-Obipi stressed that engaging productively with host communities remains central to his vision. He called digital skills essential in today's knowledge-driven economy.

According to him, the centre must stay fully operational and well-maintained. It'll serve as a hub for digital literacy training, youth empowerment, academic research and skills development.

Young people in the area will benefit most from the facility. Employment pathways, entrepreneurship opportunities and educational advancement await them through this platform.

Zeb-Obipi made an unexpected move during the commissioning. He increased the number of computers from 17 to 20, noting that an even number improves organization and efficiency.

He also recognized the warm welcome he received from residents. The Vice Chancellor awarded a three-year school scholarship to Cherish Amadi, a Primary 3 pupil who presented him with flowers.

In his words, the gesture demonstrates his administration's support for education at all levels. He described himself as "a son of the soil" committed to unity between the university and community.

Such partnership drives sustainable development. Peaceful coexistence between town and gown matters greatly, he noted.

Speaking for Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, CDC Chairman Elechi Amadi thanked RSU management for the project. He called it a significant milestone in their relationship.

Amadi viewed the centre as human capital investment. It opens gateways to future opportunities for community members, he said.

Community leaders pledged their commitment to protecting the facility. Residents will ensure proper use and long-term sustainability of the centre.
