The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong caution to the organizers of a planned nationwide protest led by the “Take It Back Movement,” urging them to reconsider the timing of their demonstration set for Monday, April 7, 2025 — the newly designated National Police Day.
According to a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the protest, though falling within citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and association, is being perceived as deliberately disruptive and potentially damaging to the country’s image. The protest is set to coincide with the national celebration recognizing the contributions of the police to national security.
“This day, which has been officially set aside by the Federal Government to honour the resilience and dedication of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, will witness the presence of high-profile dignitaries from within and outside Nigeria, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats,” the statement read.
The Police described the protest as “ill-timed and mischievous,” warning that its staging on a day of national recognition could “rubbish and malign the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole.”
While affirming that the Force is not against peaceful protests, the NPF questioned the motive behind the protest’s timing, urging organizers to consider alternative approaches.
“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act,” Adejobi noted.
He further advised that the movement and its supporters explore dialogue through appropriate governmental institutions rather than public demonstrations, assuring that the Force under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, remains committed to upholding the law and citizens’ rights.
As preparations for the National Police Day celebrations continue, the Police have appealed for cooperation from all citizens to ensure a peaceful and dignified observance.
