Police operatives from the Abakaliki Road Police Division apprehended a suspect, Mmaduabuchi Okonkwo, for allegedly possessing fake Naira notes.

The arrest took place at the Old IMT Bus Stop, Abakaliki Road, Enugu, where Okonkwo was reportedly transacting with the counterfeited currency.

DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the command, stated that the suspect was found with 40,000 suspected counterfeited one thousand denominated Naira notes.

The arrest was made possible after Okonkwo boarded a minibus from New Haven Junction to Old IMT Bus Stop and attempted to pay the driver with one of the counterfeited notes.

The driver, upon close inspection, identified the note as fake and raised an alarm, leading to Okonkwo’s arrest.

During interrogation, Okonkwo confessed that he had paid N25,000 in genuine Naira notes to an accomplice in exchange for the counterfeited N50,000.

He also admitted to having spent N10,000 of the fake notes, leaving the remaining N40,000 in his possession at the time of the arrest.

He urged the public to remain law-abiding and exercise caution when dealing with individuals suspected of possessing counterfeit currency.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned and prosecuted once investigations are concluded.
