The death toll from Ukrainian and Russian strikes on Saturday reached at least 16, underscoring the brutal fifth year of warfare as both nations escalate their attacks and peace talks stall. The casualties spread across Russian-occupied territory, north-eastern Ukraine and villages along the Russian border.
Ukrainian drones pushed their campaign deep into Russian territory, hitting a Siberian oil refinery and striking targets in Yekaterinburg in the Urals. Kyiv says these long-range strikes aim to cripple Russia's military capacity and pressure the Kremlin back to the negotiating table.
The UN has flagged a troubling rise in civilian deaths during the nearly 4.5-year conflict. Diplomatic efforts led by Washington remain frozen, with the US preoccupied by Middle East crises while Moscow pursues total control of eastern Ukraine.
Russian-installed authorities in southern Ukraine reported that a Ukrainian strike on the Azov Sea village of Kyrylivka killed eight people, including two children. Yevgeny Balitsky, Moscow's appointed head of occupied Zaporizhzhia region, claimed the target was "tourist camps" in the seaside settlement seized by Russia in the war's opening days.
The same strike left 14 people wounded in Kyrylivka, Balitsky said. Ukraine has not responded to allegations about the attack.
In north-eastern Ukraine, a Russian drone strike on the private courier company Nova Poshta in Sumy killed three drivers, according to Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelensky described it as a "double-tap" drone strike, where attackers strike the same target twice.
Russian forces killed two more people in southern Ukraine and claimed two villagers died in border villages, with one additional fatality reported in occupied Kherson region.
Ukrainian drones struck an oil refinery in Tyumen, more than 1,000 miles east of Moscow, marking one of Kyiv's most distant strikes yet. Alexander Moor, the regional governor, said a drone hit the refinery and sparked a fire.
Moscow reported Ukraine launched over 300 drones across Russian territory, reaching regions far from the front lines. The strikes have triggered fuel shortages and disrupted civilian life in Russia more severely than at any point during the conflict.
Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces struck a factory in Kirov, hundreds of kilometres from Moscow, for the second consecutive day following a deadly attack there on Friday. "Once again, a plant in Kirov was struck – the one supplying components for the weapons Russia uses to attack our people," he said.
Alexander Sokolov, Kirov's governor, declared three days of mourning after the Friday strike, which he said killed five people rather than six after one man presumed dead was discovered alive. Sokolov called the victims "heroes of the labour front" and predicted the attack would "unite us against the enemy," framing Russia's struggle as a fight against "the collective West."
