Police in Delta State have detained two brothers accused of raping a 15-year-old girl. Emmanuel Eugene, 18, and Kelvin Eugene, 20, are in custody over the alleged assault.
The crime happened in June at a residence on Okoro Street in Warri South. The location sits in Third Marine Quarters, near Third Marine Gate.
According to investigators, the girl's mother left her at home caring for a younger sibling. She went to the market but the teenager disappeared before she returned.
Family members launched a search after she vanished. A neighbour told them the girl had been spotted near the brothers' house the day before.
Security personnel later found her hiding inside a church building in Effuru. A woman cleaning the church discovered her and alerted her family.
Initially, the teenager wouldn't discuss what happened to her. She eventually broke her silence after family members pressed her repeatedly for answers.
She identified the two brothers as her attackers. According to her account, she ran away because fear and shame overwhelmed her.
Both suspects acknowledged sexual contact with the minor. They claimed she came to them willingly and wasn't forced into anything.
SP Bright Edafe, spokesman for the Delta State Police Command, confirmed the case. "Confirmed," he told reporters via text message when asked about the incident.
The victim's mother has appealed to authorities to pursue a thorough investigation. She's demanding that justice be served in her daughter's case.
